The BIST100 Index started Friday with sharp declines and with circuit breakers triggered twice after the opening. It continued its weak course for the rest of the day to close at 9,044.64, down 7.81%. The Industrial Index fell by 6.88%, while the Banking Index diverged negatively with a 9.47% decline. On a weekly basis, the BIST100 dropped by 16.57%, the Industrial Index by 12.65%, and the Banking Index diverged further with a 26.46% loss. The market was mainly influenced by domestic news flow, and investors refrained from taking weekend risks, leading to sharp sell-offs on Friday. Over the weekend, arrest warrants had been issued for several individuals, including the mayor, in corruption investigations targeting the Istanbul Municipality and some of its subsidiaries. In response, the economic administration announced a series of new measures to support the markets. The CMB declared a ban on short-selling transactions in the BIST equity market until April 25, 2025. It also announced the facilitation of share buybacks by publicly-traded companies and the relaxation of margin requirements for leveraged capital market transactions. In addition, the BIST stated that until April 25, 2025, the order-to-trade ratio (OTR) in the Equity Market would be reduced from 5:1 to 3:1, and the fee for exceeding the OTR threshold would be increased from 0.25 TL to 0.50 TL. These measures are expected to help reduce volatility and support the stabilization process. Meanwhile, political developments will be closely monitored. On the global front, despite strong manufacturing data from the U.S. early in the week indicating a robust economy, concerns over tariffs’ negative impact on global economic growth weighed heavily, weakening risk appetite. The U.S. stock markets declined on a weekly basis, while European and Asian markets followed a mixed course. This morning, the U.S. and German DAX futures are trading in positive territory, while Asian markets are trending lower. Today, markets will be closely watching PMI data from the Eurozone and the U.S. In the domestic market, the VIOP30 Index ended the Friday evening session with a 1.57% gain. We expect the Benchmark Index to start Monday with a rebound, followed by a volatile course thereafter. SUPPORT: 8,850 - 8,560 RESISTANCE: 9,200 - 9,400.
